Mandatory Setup (First Time)
This section covers the mandatory configuration steps that must be completed before JTA-01 can be safely operated. These steps establish correct vehicle geometry, sensor alignment, control input mapping, and power monitoring.
⚠️ Important
Do not connect motors or propellers during any part of the setup described in this section.
Airframe Selection
Airframe selection informs the firmware about the vehicle type and actuator layout.
Typical airframe categories:
- Multirotor (quad, hexa, octa, etc.)
- Fixed-wing
- VTOL
- Rover or marine vehicle
Procedure:
- Connect JTA-01 to the ground control software
- Navigate to the airframe or vehicle setup section
- Select the correct frame type and geometry
- Apply and reboot if prompted
Selecting an incorrect airframe can result in:
- Incorrect motor mixing
- Unsafe actuator outputs
- Inability to arm
Accelerometer and Level Calibration
Accelerometer calibration defines the reference orientation of JTA-01.
Calibration Requirements:
- Place the vehicle on a stable, level surface
- Ensure JTA-01 is firmly mounted
- Follow on-screen orientation prompts
Typical Steps:
- Level position
- Front side
- Back side
- Left side
- Right side
- Top or bottom (as prompted)
Successful calibration ensures:
- Accurate attitude estimation
- Stable hover and level flight
Gyroscope Calibration
Gyroscope calibration removes bias and drift from rotational sensors.
Procedure:
- Keep the vehicle completely still
- Avoid vibration or movement
- Allow calibration to complete uninterrupted
Gyro calibration typically runs automatically at startup but may also be initiated manually through the ground control software.
Compass Calibration
Compass calibration is required for correct heading estimation.
Preparation:
- Perform calibration outdoors or in a low-interference area
- Keep away from metal structures and power lines
- Remove magnetic objects near the vehicle
Calibration Notes:
- Rotate the vehicle slowly as instructed
- Ensure smooth motion during calibration
- Recalibrate if the compass is relocated
Incorrect compass calibration can cause:
- Heading errors
- Navigation instability
- Unexpected yaw behaviour
Radio (RC) Calibration
RC calibration maps transmitter inputs to control channels.
Steps:
- Power the RC transmitter
- Start RC calibration in ground control software
- Move all sticks and switches through full range
- Confirm channel assignments
After calibration:
- Verify stick directions
- Assign flight modes and failsafe switches
Power Calibration (Voltage and Current)
Power calibration ensures accurate battery monitoring.
When Using a Power Module:
- Verify voltage reading matches the actual battery voltage
- Verify current reading (if supported)
Accurate power calibration enables:
- Battery failsafe functions
- Reliable flight time estimation
Actuator and Motor Output Test (No Propellers)
This step verifies correct actuator assignment and direction.
Safety Rules:
- Propellers must be removed
- Perform tests with the vehicle secured
Test Objectives:
- Confirm motor numbering
- Confirm motor rotation direction
- Confirm servo travel and direction
If issues are detected:
- Correct wiring or configuration
- Repeat the test until outputs behave as expected
Parameter Save and Reboot
After completing all mandatory setup steps:
- Save configuration parameters
- Power-cycle JTA-01
- Reconnect and verify all settings
A reboot ensures that:
- All calibrations are applied
- Firmware initializes correctly with the new configuration
Setup Completion Checklist
Before proceeding further:
❏ Airframe selected correctly
❏ Accelerometer and gyro calibrated
❏ Compass calibrated
❏ RC calibrated and verified
❏ Power monitoring verified
❏ Actuator outputs verified
Once all items are complete, JTA-01 is ready for navigation setup and pre-flight safety configuration.
